CORE LEARNING

Our independence from a specific program in these early years allows us to be more flexible and focussed on our ever evolving needs in school . We aim to find the best resources and providers of educational tools so that we can be sure that what we do, why we do it and how we do it, remain continuously valid questions for our leadership and management team.

At Tanto International School we are passionate about the need to enhance and innovate education in the core subjects. We believe that it is essential to teach English, Mathematics every day and to ensure Science plays a significant role in our learning opportunities.

We ensure that History and Geography are given time and value in our schedules too. These subjects are incorporated into our English units of work ( non-fiction) so that at different times in the term students experience the subjects on a daily basis rather than once a week. This allows our children to develop strong links between non-fiction learning and quality learning concepts in Social Studies.

ENGLISH

We place a high value on reading and enjoyment of learning to read at Tanto. The children in the lower years read every day in school and guardians are asked to support this by using our reading record to keep supporting at home every evening. This also aids quality communication on this wonderful learning journey. The upper school children continue their work towards becoming lifelong readers too.

Phonics (Read, Write, inc), Grammar, Punctuation and Vocabulary (WOW words!) form part of our regular curriculum in each class.

Our teachers use Talk4Writing and BIG Write techniques to develop children's confidence and progress in writing. We are all passionate about using a variety of techniques and tools in English!

MATHEMATICS

Mathematics plays an important role in our daily lives at Tanto. The children use a well thought out combination of practical, interactive and traditional methods to develop skills, enjoyment and understanding in this most valuable subject.

The aim is to teach mathematics to young children with creativity and enthusiasm to ensure all children feel enjoyment and progress of equal measure. Our teachers use Abacus & Active Learn to support our high quality teaching and learning.

SCIENCE

In our science lessons we link many areas of the curriculum from Mathematics to Geography to Computing. Alongside this science plays a concrete role in S.T.E.M and our Digital World activities too!

Science lessons give children the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and understanding of how and why things work. We follow the Pearson Active Learn Science and Science Bug Scheme to ensure quality, breadth, depth and interactivity.

Gaining a true sense of their world and how it works; essential for our future generations. This begins from a very early age in our school as we know how important it is to our children, our society and our planet that Science is highly valued from the very foundations of education; engaging young minds and posing a limitless range of questions!

GEOGRAPHY

We aim to develop excitement and engagement with our world to ensure our children better understand its people, places and environments. We examine interactions between people, how and why places are changing, to better imagine, predict and work towards, likely and preferred futures. This links closely to our science curriculum and also the work in our Global Citizenship Projects.

Children should not only ask questions and research information but also debate ideas and form strong, well thought out opinions about the world they live in.

We use Collins Primary Geography to offer a high quality Geography curriculum. Our lessons provide a wide range of recurring themes that are covered through different topics each year. The themes of World Around Us, Investigation, Change, Movement and Issues become a focus for each year group. Within these units, children access common concepts of Planet Earth, Water, Weather, Settlements, Work & Travel and the Environment.
